An Urgent Need of the Hour - Make Road Engineering Efficient and Effective

The growing population and the increasing traffic on the roads is putting our country’s already fragmented and weak road network under a lot of strain. Traffic congestion, flaring tempers and fatal accidents are becoming a daily event, and a staggering number of 400 deaths and 6400 serious injuries get reported on Indian roads every day. The faulty road planning and designing are responsible for the maximum number of these alarming statistics. It has become crucial to a make road engineering more scientific, relevant and research driven. It is time to take tough stands and work towards making our road network efficient and safe for the users. There is an urgent need to take some severe actions and plans into place to improve the condition of the roads and to make them efficient and effective to keep pace with the growing urbanisation.

What is Road or Highway Engineering?

Road or highway engineering is a scientific study of the existing and proposed roads - design, construction, and efficient connectivity, aimed at making the entire road network safe and smooth flowing. It studies the existing road network and comes up with solutions to improve it and build more roads wherever required. The growing vehicular traffic demands that the road network is expanded and road engineering works towards planning and designing the proposed roads or highways.  All aspects related to the designs of the roads and how pedestrians are managed.

Importance of highway engineering

Highway engineering is a critical measure and contributes significantly to building and maintaining safer roads. It studies the traffic volume to determine the best strategy to minimise traffic congestion, prevent mishaps and also minimise the damage and wear and tear to the road infrastructure caused by the traffic. The road engineers even design systems to optimise the traffic flow and improve the safety of all vehicles using that road.

The designing and building of roads come after an exhaustive study of the existing network – case studies, analysis of data on accident investigation, data on accidents on that particular road, the condition of the road, the usage of the road, connectivity of the road, being some of the points of study.

While road safety audits ensure that both new and existing roads have potential safety problems dealt with, before they lead to a mishap, however, all of these are finally dependant on the skill of the engineer responsible for the design or management of the concerned road.

Well-designed roads and well-developed traffic management are essential features of every industrialised country, and modern economies depend heavily on them. Therefore all measures have to be taken into account for building roads that are safer, less likely to develop as accident-prone areas and allow a smooth and efficient flow of traffic flow of traffic.
