Traffic management in metropolitan cities is always a bigger challenge compared to smaller cities and towns. The speed of traffic in urban centres is much faster, the number of vehicles much higher and roads, signals and turns many more compared to smaller towns.
Each of these three aspects requires special attention from the authorities for a smooth flow of traffic in big cities. Common people also have a role to play in better traffic management on the city roads — both as drivers and pedestrians.
Speed Kills
The big, wide roads in most parts of cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru mean that traffic moves much more smoothly and swiftly on them. However, the same wide roads become a temptation to the drivers to over-speed which leads to most of the accidents. The highways leading out of these cities are even broader and the incidence of both over-speeding and consequent crashes, higher.
It’s imperative that speed limits and traffic laws are implemented very strictly in metro cities. Challans and punishments have to be handed out in all cases to discourage any such violations and especially repeat offenders. Drivers and riders on their part need to understand that the wide roads are for a smooth flow of the heavy traffic and not for them to practice their racing skills.
Cars, Cars Everywhere — Not a Safe Road to Drive
The higher the number of vehicles on the roads, more the number of crashes! With the economic boom in the country over the last three decades, the number of vehicles on Indian roads has grown much bigger. More so in the bigger cities!
For smooth traffic management with such a large number of vehicles on the roads, the authorities must ensure that not only traffic laws are followed strictly, but the rules on the maintenance of the vehicles are also implemented strictly. Insurance is a must for all vehicles as it helps compensate the victims in the case or a crash and any eventualities.
Commuters should try to use vehicles as little as possible to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads. Sharing cars between family members and carpools between office colleagues should be encouraged. Each person need not drive alone in a car for the smallest of trips outside the home. Walking and cycling also need to be encouraged.
Signals Play the Most Important Role in Traffic Management
Traffic signals in big cities need to be perfectly in order. The high speed and volume of traffic on the roads can cause mayhem with signals that are not functional. Speed limits and other instructions need to be marked very clearly with signboards on both sides of the roads. Zebra crossings and road markings need to be well maintained and present wherever required.
Drivers and pedestrians on their part need to follow signals and instructions to avoid possibilities of crashes. The authorities must hand out punishments for any violations of the rule. Only if the governments and common people join hands can the problems of traffic management in metro cities can be solved.
